Nighttime Safety

In a hadith narrated by Abu Mas’ud, the Prophet (ﷺ) said,

“If somebody recited the last two Verses of Surat Al-Baqara at night, that would be sufficient for him.”

(Bukhari)

This demonstrates that those who recite the last two verses of Surah Baqarah before bed will be protected overnight.

But there is some discussion among scholars as to whether the word “enough for him” refers to it being sufficient in place of tahajjud, as a means of protection from Shaytan, or simply sufficient in terms of good actions.

In the tafsir of Ibn Kathir, in these last two verses, he talked about the Hadith of Ibn Mas’ud:

“While the Messenger of Allah was with Jibril, he heard a noise from above. 

Jibril lifted his sight to the sky and said, ‘This is a door opened just now in heaven, and it was never opened before.’ An angel came down through the door to the Prophet and said:

“Receive the good news of two lights you have been given and which no Prophet before you was given: the Opener of the Book (Al-Fatihah) and the last Ayat in Surat Al-Baqarah. 

You will not read a letter of them, but you will be granted its benefit.'” (Muslim)

Conclusion

The most significant section of Surah Baqarah was revealed during the first two years of the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) life in Madinah. 

It is the longest Surah in the Quran and includes most legal and historical topics. There are also divine messages and commands in Surah al-Baqarah.
