Sa’i is one of the mandatory rites of the Pilgrimage, which is connected with the story of Hajar (RA). She wandered between the hills of Safa and Marwah while searching for water for her infant son.
In order to renew the memory of Hajar’s devotion to her son and obey Allah’s orders, the Pilgrims have to run seven times between these hills in order to complete this stage of the Pilgrimage.
This rite helps to keep in mind the faithfulness, patience, and full trust in Allah Almighty, as well as the renewal of these qualities in the hearts of the faithful.

What is Sa’i in Umrah?
Sa’i is the common ritual of both the pilgrimages, Hajj and Umrah. It is the act of walking between the two hills, Safa and Marwah.
The pilgrims have to walk seven times from one hill to another. The distance between the two hills is covered as one round, whereas returning back from Marwah to Safa covers the second round.
The female pilgrims are required to complete the Sa’i at a normal speed. However, the male pilgrims are required to jog and run alternatively between the two designated green markings.
The process is repeated for seven times. In addition, during the whole time of this activity, the pilgrims are supposed to remember Allah Almighty through dhikr, supplications and remembrance.
Dua to Read at Safa
When approaching Safa for the first time, Allah says in the Quran:
“Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah.”
Quran 2:158
The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) recited this verse when approaching Safa and then said:
“We begin with what Allah began with.”
After reaching Safa, face the Kaaba and raise your hands for dua. The Prophet (SAW) is reported to have praised Allah and declared His greatness before making supplication.
A well-known supplication is:
Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar.
Then:
La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd, wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadir. La ilaha illallahu wahdah, anjaza wa’dah, wa nasara ‘abdah, wa hazamal-ahzaba wahdah.
Meaning:
“There is no god but Allah alone, without partner. To Him belongs the dominion and to Him is all praise, and He has power over everything. There is no god but Allah alone. He fulfilled His promise, helped His servant, and defeated the confederates alone.”
Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) then made duas after reciting this supplication. He also repeated the above-mentioned supplication at Marwah and throughout Sa’i.
Can You Make Personal Duas During Sa’i?
You don’t have to memorise any supplications for Sa’i. There is complete freedom to recite whichever supplications you want to recite. You can also make personal duas during this ritual. You can ask Allah for anything good in this life and the Hereafter. Make duas for:
- Forgiveness of sins
- Stronger faith and sincerity
- Acceptance of your Umrah
- Good health and well-being
- Your parents and family
- A righteous spouse
- Children and their guidance
- Halal rizq and financial ease
- Success in your work or studies

Duas to Recite Between Safa and Marwah
There are no fixed duas to recite in each individual lap of the pilgrimage. You don’t have to feel that you will not be able to complete your Sa’i if you don’t recite any fixed supplications.
You can spend the journey between Safa and Marwah in:

- Reciting the Quran
- Saying dhikr
- Sending salawat upon the Prophet (SAW)
- Asking Allah for forgiveness

A simple dua you can repeat is:
Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina ‘adhaban-nar.
Meaning:
“Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”
Powerful Duas to Make During Sa’i
There are many powerful duas that you can make during Sa’i. Some of them are listed below:
1. Dua for Forgiveness
Rabbighfir li warhamni wa tub ‘alayya, innaka antat-Tawwabur-Rahim.
Meaning:
“My Lord, forgive me, have mercy upon me, and accept my repentance. Indeed, You are the One who accepts repentance, the Most Merciful.”
You can also frequently say:
Astaghfirullaha wa atubu ilayh.
“ I seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to Him.”
2. Dua for Guidance
Rabbana la tuzigh qulubana ba‘da idh hadaytana wa hab lana milladunka rahmah, innaka antal-Wahhab.
Meaning:
“Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us, and grant us mercy from You. Indeed, You are the Bestower.”
3. Dua for Ease
Rabbishrah li sadri, wa yassir li amri.
Meaning:
“My Lord, expand my chest for me and make my task easy for me.”
4. Dua for Your Parents
Rabbir-hamhuma kama rabbayani saghira.
Meaning:
“My Lord, have mercy upon them as they raised me when I was small.”
5. Dua for Jannah
Allahumma inni as’alukal-jannah wa a‘udhu bika minan-nar.
Meaning:
“O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and seek refuge in You from the Fire.”
